Last weekend I was browsing my local Miata Facebook group and came across a set of Hoosier Sm6 tires for $100. At the same time, I found a set of enkei wheels with some curb rash for $100. Then today, I mounted them at the auto hobby shop at work! Man what a pain that tire machine was with slicks! The balancing machine wasn’t working so I’ll have to take them elsewhere for balancing.
The wheels are 15x6.5 and weigh about 14 pounds each. Not really light but not overly heavy either. For the price, I am happy as can be. They cleaned up nicely and I am excited to see how these tires perform at autocross.
Now the only reason why they were so cheap is that they have already been through 8 heat cycles on a spec miata and are effectively done for competitive track sessions. The guy I bought them from just wanted get rid of them since he was looking for something with more feedback on the track. These will be perfect for autox though as long as it is hot and dry out.
And of course the fun part is going to be how do I get these to the events? Naturally I am going to use my luggage rack and forgo the transportation of a passenger. I can’t fit any of the tires in the trunk so the fourth one is tied down to my passenger seat. At least I have all of my trunk space for my floor jack and helmet and other things.
The only real pain is that I live in a third floor apartment so bringing these up and down for every autox is going to be a hassle. I’m also going to be running CSP and be fully uncompetitive but I’m only out there to have fun anyways. And I’m certain I can have lots of fun with slicks on a miata for autox!
Yes a harbor freight tire trailer would be nice but I'd have nowhere to put it. So now I have two stacks of tires in my apartment, my winter set and my autox set. I'm also considering replacing my daily wheels so I might end up with a third set sitting around temporarily. At least all these tires and wheels have been cheap, because miata.

Haha great idea! Thankfully I have the closet space but yeah that seems far more useful. I think I could make a second ottoman for sure.

You know slicks can't be balanced on the wheel, yeah? You need to take the tires back off and then just balance the wheel.

Yeah. Slicks move around on the wheel so much, traditional balancing doesn’t do any good. Also, they don't hold air like normal tires. Don't be alarmed if they get rather low while sitting.

These are very good things to know. Because I certainly would have been alarmed lol. That also makes sense why the balancing machine didn't make any sense. The weights for inner and outer balance were changing and wouldn't zero out. Idk if that is related or just a coincidence. But that is very good to know!
